The need for further development of distance education

Distance education has many factors to recommend it.  It is low cost, highly accessible, and versatile.  However, further development is needed because the effectiveness of these courses is, in many instances, not adequately measured.  Quality instructional design is often lacking in online courses, partly due to the lack of expert developers.  Distance education is the wave of the future, but much work remains to be done.
